If you’re a Windows 8 user and you’re fed up with the much maligned Twitter app for the platform, there is now a fantastic alternative that will make Tweeting a pleasure again. Step forward Tweetium, a Twitter client that combines unique features with a design that makes the most of the Windows platform.
Powerful Twitter features
Tweetium is packed with useful features so it's tough to choose which ones to mention. The customizable menu at the top of the screen allows you to pin streams of your choice. This could be users, apps, searches, your lists etc. This options helps you monitor the mountain of information available in Twitter – from your followers, but also if you want to see Tweets from a particular user or monitor a hashtag.
If you've got a lost of 'noise' in your timeline coming from a particular user, you can chose to mute them. This feature extends to muting hashtags - perfect if the people you are following are all Twittering on about an event that has no interest to you.
If you only have a couple of minutes to check your Twitter feed but you spot an interesting Tweet you’d like to follow on, you can save your place and come back to the exact same spot later. Meanwhile, unlike in Twitter, Instagram photos show up in their full glory, instead of just a link to the image.
Another advantage that Tweetium offers over the native Twitter app is that it adapts to the Windows 8 device you are using – so whether you are using a desktop PC with keyboard and mouse or a tablet in portrait view, it provides a suitable user experience. Not only that, the app syncs your settings across both this Windows 8 version and the Windows Phone app - taking advantage of the Windows 8 build once and deploy across different devices strategy.
Fluid user experience
Tweetium's side-scrolling interface provides a unique (and surprisingly user friendly) way to view your Twitter timelines. It also allows you to either see two completely different Twitter feeds side by side (your mentions and main timeline, for example), or to work on another program while using Tweetium. This option works in a similar way to Windows’ snap feature. However, it is limited to only two streams on screen at one time (although you can open streams in new windows), whereas other Twitter clients allow you to view five or six on the same screen. You can add multiple accounts but only courtesy of an in-app purchase.
The reply, retweet, favorite, and share (via email, for example) buttons are prominently positioned in a clear way under each Tweet, making these actions quick and easy.
Writing a Tweet is equally straightforward, as clicking on the pencil icon brings up the Tweet box in the middle of your timeline – so you can still see what's happening in the background. The app also allows you to quickly dip in and out of Tweets to see replies without leaving your main timeline. This highlights one of the strengths of Tweetium - making every single action never more than a click away.
Built with Windows in mind
Aside from its excellent feature set, Tweetium is a Twitter client that has been adapted especially to suit the Windows platform. From the snap feature to the pin to the menu option, it's built with Windows users in mind, not badly adapted from another platform.
Add to that the focus on providing a great user experience whatever size of device you are on and whether you are using a touchscreen or a keyboard and mouse, as well as the ability to sync settings across Windows 8 and Windows Phone, and you have an app that will make Twitter power users very happy.
